Thomas Kennedy will wear the jersey of Cedevita Olimpija in the upcoming season. In his first interview after arriving in Ljubljana, he shares what convinced him to come to the Slovenian capital, how he’s preparing for the challenges of the ABA League and EuroCup, and why he’s especially excited to play under head coach Zvezdan Mitrović. “I know the fans proudly stand behind the club – and I can’t wait to be part of that story,” says the 24-year-old Canadian.

Two key factors drew him to Ljubljana, and both the ABA League and EuroCup represent a new challenge for him.

“The higher level of physical play and the different styles of basketball within each team are something I’m really interested in, and I’m already looking forward to it. The second major reason is the opportunity to play under coach Zvezdan Mitrović. I have great respect for his basketball knowledge and the energy he brings to his teams. That played a big role in my decision to join Cedevita Olimpija.”

He and his partner have already done a bit of research on Ljubljana and are excited about the move.

“To be honest, I don’t know much about Ljubljana yet, but my girlfriend and I did some research. We quickly found that it’s considered one of the most underrated European capitals, and also one of the greenest. As a Canadian, I really value being close to nature, and Slovenia clearly offers that – not just outside the city, but within Ljubljana itself. That makes both of us very happy.”

When asked about his goals for the upcoming season, Kennedy is clear.

“Personally, I want to continue building my career and establish my name in European basketball. My journey is just beginning, so my focus is on consistent growth. As for the team – my goal is simple: to help us win. I take pride in doing even the smallest things that help the team succeed – whether it’s making the right decision in a key moment, playing defense, or creating opportunities for teammates. Over the course of a long season, those little things really add up.”

Although he has yet to play in the ABA League or EuroCup, that challenge excites him the most.

“I see both competitions as extremely high-level. The ABA League includes several EuroLeague teams this season, and the EuroCup features many strong clubs aiming for the top – just like Cedevita Olimpija. I expect every game in both leagues to be a big challenge. I’m looking forward to testing myself at this level and showing what I can do.”

His experience in Germany, playing for Telekom Bonn and in the Basketball Champions League (BCL), provided a valuable foundation.

“During my time with Bonn and in the BCL, I developed a lot of skills, but the most important lesson I learned was the importance of routine. When you’re playing multiple games each week, consistency is crucial – physically and mentally. You have to take care of your body, stay focused, and keep improving throughout the season. You can’t afford to stagnate in this profession. I’ve developed a solid routine over the past few years, and that’s something I’ll definitely bring into this new chapter.”

So what can Cedevita Olimpija fans expect from Thomas?

“They can expect a lot of energy. I like to communicate on the court, I’m vocal, and I play with a high basketball IQ. I focus on making the right decisions and doing what it takes to win – whether it’s grabbing a rebound, running the floor, setting strong screens, or finishing above the rim, which I enjoy a lot too. I’m excited to meet the fans – and I hope they’ll get to know me through the way I play.”

He’s using the summer to prepare physically and mentally for the new season.

“This summer I’m focusing on the things that helped me build my name in Europe, while also working on my weaknesses. I’m training at the Canadian national training center in Toronto, about four hours from my hometown. Even when I’m home, I’m in the gym regularly. Summer is a great time for physical and mental refreshment. I’m spending time with family, friends, and in Canadian nature – while also getting ready for the challenges ahead. I’m especially excited about exploring Slovenia’s nature.”

At the end of the conversation, Thomas Kennedy sends a heartfelt message to Cedevita Olimpija fans:

“I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans – and I hope they’re excited to meet me too. I know they’re proud of their club and their city, and I hope I’ll quickly come to understand and share that pride. I’m here to help the team win and to contribute to the club’s rich tradition of success.”
