Cedevita Olimpija will continue with a busy schedule of matches with teams competing in European competitions on Sunday at 19.00, when it will host Podgorica’s Budućnost VOLI in the fifth round of the regional league in Arena Stožice.
On Sunday, the basketball players of Cedevita Olimpija will face their rivals from the group in the 7DAYS EuroCup competition, the basketball players of Budućnost VOLI, on the home cone floor in the fifth round of the regional league. The latter have three victories after four rounds played in the new regional season, and the last time the players, led by Aleksandar Džikić, beat Igokea 81:68 in Morača last Saturday.
In the clash with the semi-finalists from last season, Dennis Jerome Seeley showed a very good performance in Podgorica, scoring 21 points and giving four more assists. Willie Reed added 18 points, six rebounds.
Budućnost VOLI also started its performances in the 7DAYS EuroCup international competition this week, and like Cedevita Olimpija, the Podgorica team also won. On a tour of Germany, the 2018 ABA League champions defeated ratiopharm Ulm 86:79. Justin Cobbs, a former member of Zagreb’s Cedevita, scored 18 points and six assists, while Jacob Wiley scored 16 points.
The member team of the Ljubljana club returned in the middle of the evening from a small trip, which the players and members of the professional staff went on last Saturday. The Dragons first led to Belgrade, where they lost to Crvena zvezda mts last Sunday (64:79), and on Tuesday they played in Las Palmas and defeated Gran Canaria in the first round of the new 7DAYS EuroCup season after an extraordinary turnaround and a tough fight. 79:77). Cedevita Olimpija’s top scorers were Jacob Pullen with 27 points, Jaka Blažič with 18 points and Melvin Ejim with 12 points.
The rivals are old acquaintances from last season, as they competed in both the ABA League and the second part of the 7DAYS EuroCup. Cedevita Olimpija was stronger on both sides of the floor, while Budućnost won twice in Podgorica. The defeat in Morača in the last round of the second part of the European Cup buried the Dragons’ hopes of breaking into the quarterfinals of the competition.
The television broadcast of the match will be available on TV Slovenia 2 and Arena Sport 1.
STATEMENTS AHEAD OF THE GAME:
Jurica Golemac, head coach of Cedevita Olimpija:
“In Sunday’s match with Buducnost, we will have to work all 40 minutes if we want to record a victory. It is a very good and high team that plays strong and physical basketball, and the players have experience of playing in the Euroleague and the European Cup. The head coach of the Podgorica team is one of the most tactically trained coaches in this area. We will definitely have to play focused, physically and smartly the whole match. We will do everything to keep the victory in Stožice. At the same time, I invite all the fans to come in as many numbers as possible to Sunday’s match, as we will definitely need their help.”
Luka Rupnik, player of Cedevita Olimpija:
“The core of the Buducnost team is the same as last season, and I mean Justin Cobbs and Willie Reed, and they were joined by the experienced DJ Seeley, who is a very good player. We know the game of their head coach Aleksandar Džikić, but I believe he will try to find our bad qualities. I believe that we will respond well to their game, and above all, it is important that we throw for every ball, and that we do our best on the home floor to record a victory. I hope that as many fans as possible will join us in Stožice. Already at the match with FMP it felt like they were with us. I believe that they will see that we have a good team with a lot of Slovenian boys, and that we will be even stronger with them in the stands.”
