In the position of Point Guard, Cedevita Olimpija will be strengthened by Yogi Ferrell in the continuation of the season, who brings to Ljubljana his experience with playing in the North American NBA League and the elite Euroleague. The 28-year-old American player last wore the jersey of Greek Panathinaikos.
In the Cedevita Olimpija jersey, we will be able to follow Yogi Ferrell in the rest of the season, the player we last saw in the Panathinaikos jersey in the elite Euroleague. Prior to that, he spent most of his entire career in the NBA League and the NBA Development League. Among other things, Ferrell was also selected in 2017 as the second top five rookie in the strongest league in the world.
Ferrell was not selected in the 2016 NBA roster, and the same year he first signed a contract with the Brooklyn Nets, in whose jersey he also played in the summer league. At the end of October, the Nets terminated his contract with him, and in November, he signed a contract with their development team, the Long Island Nets. Ferrell circled between the two teams in the early 2016/17 season and then joined the Dallas Mavericks in early 2017. In 36 games, 29 of which he started in the top five of the Texas team, he averaged 11.3 points and 4.3 assists per game. He spent the season after that again in Dallas, scoring 10.2 points and 2.5 assists and playing in all 82 games.
He moved to the Sacramento Kings, and spent his last season in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers. For the Clippers, he scored 4.6 points, 2.1 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game in eight games in the 2020/21 season, and in the playoffs he played in nine games, spending 1.7 minutes on the floor and scoring 0.4 points and 0.3 assists per game.
In the jersey of Greek Panathanaikos, Yogi Ferrell has played in five games this Euroleague season. In just under eight minutes of play, he scored 1.6 points, 1.8 assists and 1.0 rebounds per game.
Sani Bečirović, sports director of Cedevita Olimpija:
“We have a long period of searching for a solution to our lack of the position of Point Guard. It was intertwined with finding a player that would suit our game system and negotiating on the way to the final signing of the contract, and the player we were looking for was found in Yogi Ferrell. We are extremely pleased that Ferrell has decided to join Cedevita Olimpija as he has had many suitors from clubs playing at the highest European level. Ferrell comes to Ljubljana from the strong Panathianikos and we believe that with his way of playing he will be able to join the team, raise our game to a higher level and help us achieve our goals.”
Jurica Golemac, head coach of Cedevita Olimpija:
“We are happy that Yogi Ferrell has signed a contract with us. We have been looking for a Point Guard for a long time. There are very few options on the market, and Yogi immediately caught our eye. We talked for a long time, but in the end we came to an agreement to come to Ljubljana and help us and ourselves. We’re sure we brought in a quality game organizer who doesn’t have much experience playing in Europe and has a good career in the NBA League behind him. He will definitely need time to get to know the team. He is a winner by nature, likes to play defense and likes to win. I’m sure it will take a lot less time to adjust than some might think. I emphasize, we are very happy that he landed at Cedevita Olimpija.”
