The senior men’s basketball team of Cedevita Olimpija defeated Perspektiva Ilirija on Tuesday at Hala Tivoli in the first leg of the Spar Cup quarterfinals by a score of 84:78, thus securing a 6-point advantage ahead of the second leg, which will be played in February next year.
The defending Slovenian Cup champions, the basketball players of Cedevita Olimpija, successfully opened their Spar Cup quarterfinal campaign. The Ljubljana Dragons beat Perspektiva Ilirija on Tuesday at Hala Tivoli in the first leg by a score of 84:78. Cedevita Olimpija appeared with a lineup somewhat different from the ones we are used to seeing in EuroCup and ABA League games, which is a consequence of the competition regulations under the auspices of the Basketball Federation of Slovenia. The second leg will take place in February next year in Stožice, and the team with the better aggregate score over the two games will advance to the semifinals.
The year is not yet over for Cedevita Olimpija—on Saturday, the Ljubljana side faces a regional league derby against Crvena zvezda Meridianbet in Belgrade, and on Tuesday they will take on Aris in the EuroCup in Thessaloniki.
GAME REPORT:
Cedevita Olimpija entered the first Spar Cup quarterfinal game in a very determined manner and already held a tangible ten-point lead after the first quarter (16–26). However, the players coached by head coach Zvezdan Mitrović eased off somewhat in the second period and allowed the home side back into the fight for victory. At halftime, the score was tied at 36–36. In the second half, fans in the Temple of Slovenian Basketball witnessed a closely contested game, at the end of which Cedevita Olimpija celebrated the win.
DJ Stewart was the leading scorer for the Dragons with 18 points. Aleksej Nikolić added 14 points.
